Side Effects
Furosemide is generally well tolerated. Side effects of a minor nature such as nausea, malaise or gastric upset may occur but are not usually severe enough to necessitate withdrawal of treatment. Serum Calcium levels may be reduced, in very rare case there has been observed Nephrocalcinosis has been reported in premature infants.
The indications of allergic reactions, such as skin rashes, photosensitivity, vasculitis, fever, interstitial nephritis or shock, is very slow but when these occur, treatment should be withdrawn. Standard measures for the treatment of shock should be taken if necessary.
Isolated cases of acute pancreatitis have been reported after long term diuretic (Including Furosemide) treatment. Disorder of hearing after Furosemide is rare, and in most cases reversible. They may occur if Furosemide is injected too rapidly, particularly in patients with renal insufficiency.
As with other diuretics, a transient rise in creatinine and urea levels has been reported with Furosemide. In common with other sulfonamide-based diuretics hyperuricaemia may occur and in rare cases, clinical gout may be precipitated.
Bone marrow depression has been reported as a rare completion and necessitates withdrawal of treatment.
Preexisting metabolic alkalosis (e.g. decompensated cirrhosis of the liver) may be aggravated by Furosemide treatment.
Reduced mental alertness may impair ability to drive or operate dangerous machinery.
